NICOLE WELCH - ILLUMINATION BLUE MOUNTAINS 2013
Illumination, Blue Mountains' was commissioned by the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre for permanent display in the entrance foyer. Here a lit chandelier is suspended above the sublime vista of the Narrow Neck escarpment. It is the result of a site-specific plain-air photograph and 24-hour photo shoot, involving specialised equipment, considerable planning and unpredictable weather. The resulting image is, as Welch states: "reminiscent of early Australian Romantic painting with dramatic vistas of cascading light and wild 'untouched' wilderness". The presence of the chandelier interrupts the scene; at once a poetic vision and a powerful comment on colonial representations of the Australian landscape.
